‘Believe in what you want so much that it has no choice but to materialise…’
The Secret by Rhonda Byrne was released in 2006, however I did not pick up a copy of it until 10 years later in September 2016. On the first day of Spring, I made a vow to radiate positivity. I’m generally an optimistic person but after reading The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin, I realised that we could all stand to be a little happier, grateful and more positive. Like Gretchen, I knew I had a wonderful life filled with love but still I found myself getting caught up in road-rage, frustration when things didn’t go my way and moments of restlessness due to the bad weather. I was aware that my thoughts were becoming quite negative which made me determined to change my mindset. I began researching how to become more positive and that’s when I stumbled across The Secret….
I didn’t know anything about manifestation and ‘The Law of Attraction’ until I read this powerful little book. A few pages in, I realised to my delight that I had been subconsciously manifesting the wonderful life I had created in the last five years simply through self-love, visualisation and positivity. However, there was still so much more to learn! The basic principle of ‘The Law of Attraction’ is whatever you send out into the Universe is what you get back. If you’re the type of person to continuously say things like ‘just my luck’ and ‘why do things always happen to me’, you will continue to receive situations that make you feel unlucky. If you live, breathe and think ‘abundance’, you will be richly rewarded with an abundant life. The saying ‘like calls to like’ is very popular in The Secret. What we think, we attract. Our thoughts are extremely powerful and if we think of something often enough, the frequency of our energy will vibrate and communicate with the Universe. The Universe then listens and gives you more of whatever is on your mind the most. This is called manifestation…
There are 3 steps to manifesting and attracting whatever you wish in life:
Step 1.) ASK
How do you ask the Universe for what you want? Well, you can speak it aloud, write it down, create a vision-board that you examine daily or think about it. It needs to be at the forefront of your mind so you can energetically project it outwards. One life-coach in The Secret described it as mentally placing an order in a catalogue. Once you’ve placed your order, you simply sit back and allow it to come…whenever it’s meant to. I love reading the hundreds of individual stories on the website proving how incredible manifestation can be. You can ask for small things like ‘today I will find a parking space’ or big things like ‘one day I will be a millionaire.’ I remember asking the Universe years ago if one day I could meet Anne Rice or just glimpse her on the street and in 2014, I spoke to her in New Orleans on October 30th (a great date!) in the church she was baptised in. It was completely by chance and I still cannot believe it happened. Whatever you want for your life, you have the ability to create.
Step 2.) BELIEVE
When you ask for your heart’s deepest desire, you cannot be half-hearted in your request. You need to believe not only that it will come to you but that it’s already yours. Back when I was writing my first novel, I would visualise it becoming a physical published book I could hold in my hand and read. I was so excited about the idea that I spoke and thought about my book as if it already existed. Not long after it was finished, a publishing deal found me and now I get to hold two of my books in my hands. It’s amazing! You need to believe the Universe will deliver and imagine it belonging to you right now. On the weekend, my mum told me she was struggling to find shoes to wear to my wedding. She was going to go on one last hunt and I told her to visualise finding the perfect pair before she entered the store. She told me with confidence that she would find them and the first store she entered, there they were just waiting to be hers! She believed and so she received.
Step 3.) RECEIVE
You’ve sent your intentions into the Universe, believed in them with all your heart and now you need to allow them to come. I use the word allow because I know more than anybody how hard it can be to relinquish control and leave things up to fate. I love planning, organising and knowing my next steps so to place that power in the hands of the Universe can be tricky depending on your personality but it’s oh so necessary! There is no arrival date for your dreams. They will come, it’s just a matter of when not if. After I had been single for a while, I began visualising the true love of my life. I actually remember one meditation session where I vibrated so intensely, the images were wonderfully real. I was standing in a field as the sun was beginning to set, wearing a long white dress and my wavy hair blowing in the wind. I remembered feeling elated to the point of tears. Next to me stood a man with dark hair and we were so happy and in love. I just knew he was the man of my dreams. I remembered thinking ‘we stand together but are independent beings.’ Not even a month later, I met Francis (who has dark hair) and he quite literally possessed everything I had visualised including extra values I had never realised were important to me until I met him (like compassion for animals and financial security). I still feel that euphoria with him and at the end of this month we are getting married. As strange as it sounds, sometimes it feels like I dreamed him into existence but really, I was projecting exactly what I wanted in a partner and the Universe conspired with me to make it happen!
So did reading The Secret help me become more positive? Certainly! I realised that if I wanted to be a more positive person, I had to think more positively. It sounds obvious but remember, like attracts like, so if you’re in possession of a negative mindset, you will continue to receive negativity. Let that keep you accountable the next time you catch yourself brooding over something insignificant!
The last piece of advice that I gained from The Secret was to be truly content with what you already have. You can have a wishlist as long as The Great Wall of China but if you aren’t grateful for your life and who you are now, it won’t make you happy when you finally do receive it. I love my life as it is now and I honestly would not mind if my list of requests never came to pass but I know in my heart and soul that they will. I will now share with you what I have asked the Universe for since reading The Secret. I have actually printed off images of all these things and look at them every single day with intent and gratitude:
- A beautiful little home with a lovely garden, nature all around, a porch-swing out the front and a reading nook inside overlooking the flowers (it helps to be specific!).
- Opportunities to travel as much as possible, wherever possible and to be surrounded by nature all of our lives.
- For my books & blog to take off. This doesn’t mean J.K Rowling famous but rather to create a community of people that love reading my work and sharing their thoughts/views with me. Whenever I meditate on this, my blog stats go up and my Facebook page gets a spike in views! As long as I am writing for the rest of my life, I will be happy.
- Two happy, healthy children that love animals as much as their parents and have an adventurous spirit.
- A beach house outside of Victoria that Francis and I can purchase one day so we can get away as a family whenever we like and make lots of memories. I printed off a picture of a beach house I adore and I can actually see us spending a lot of our time there.
- A positive mind. I visualise and focus on positivity all day long. As a result, I feel better, connect with others more & practice gratitude daily.
- Peaceful relationships. These can be with my relatives, husband and children.
What does your dream life look like? Start writing your list, visualising what you want and sending it out into the Universe. Life truly is what we make it, so ask and you shall receive!
If you would like more information, I highly recommend reading The Secret or watching the film. Let me know in the comments below if you have any manifestation stories!

I have not seen or read The Secret. Hopefully I get to do so at some point, I’ve heard quite a bit of it. I like the Three Steps to live a more wholesome and happier life, and how your approach to life is simple. We don’t need to sell millions of books to be happy or millions of dollars. Often what makes us happy us living in the moments around us. These days I’m taking each day one by one, and do what makes me happy 🙂
Thanks Mabel! It’s a great book, really worth reading just for some positive inspiration! The simplest approach is the best I believe 🙂 It’s great to hear that you’re living day by day – the present moment is all we have and when we focus on the past or the future we are breeding anxiety. Lots of love to you! <3 x
