April 13th-Which Disney Pet Do I Wish I Had?

Hi all!

Welcome to Day 13 of the 30 Day Disney Blogging Challenge!

Today we are looking at Disney Pets which can easily be confused with Sidekicks but are actually two completely different things. A Sidekick is typically a friend who speaks, offers opinions, makes the viewers laugh and defends the protagonist until the bitter end. A pet is typically a non-speaking animal (either domestic or tamed) kept for companionship or pleasure. I could not go through this entire 30 Day Challenge without mentioning one of my favourite movies of all time: The Nightmare Before Christmas. If I could only adopt one Disney pet out of all the films ever made, it would have to be…

ZERO!

In the human world, people generally keep dogs as pets. In Halloween Town, charismatic Jack Skellington owns an adorable ghost dog. Zero has a glowing pumpkin nose (this could be because his master is referred to as the Pumpkin King or symbolic for when Jack becomes Santa and needs his version of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer to guide his sleigh) and his gravestone/kennel resides in the cemetery outside of town. According to Disney Wikipedia, just like Pluto, Zero is a basset-hound.

One evening, when Jack is taking Zero for a walk (or rather a float), they discover the door to Christmas Town together. It is here that Jack comes up with the idea to host their very own scary Christmas. For a ghost dog, Zero is extremely placid, loving and supportive. He is an ally to Jack and one that plays quite a vital role in the film…

For example, when Jack is ready to deliver presents all over the world on Christmas Eve, Zero lights the way with his glowing pumpkin nose. In the last scene, when Jack and Sally kiss, Zero flies into the air and transforms into a star. As he cannot speak, this is his way of delighting in their union. He knows a happy ending when he sees one!

Despite Zero technically being dead, when we see him asleep in his basket, his chest moves up and down as though he is breathing. Like a dog, when Zero is happy, he wags his spectral tail or flips in the air. You cannot fear this adorable creature. He’s too adorable to be deemed scary.

So why would I want Zero as a pet?

1.) Ghost-Dog…need I say more?

2.) Zero cannot die, he’s already dead!

3.) He is incredibly low-maintenance. As a ghost, he does not need to eat therefore there would be no waste to clean up.

4.) His pumpkin nose would light my way whenever I felt like taking a midnight stroll. Plus, if anybody tried anything, they would run away in terror at my undead pet!

5.) He can do much more fancy tricks than just roll-over or lay-down. He can flip, float and fly!

6.) He’s crazy cute!

It’s an obvious choice for me. Zero is a winner. I melt every time I see him on screen. Not many people can say they have a transparent puppy as a pet so I choose him. If only there was a ghost-dog shelter!

Which Disney pet would you own if you could? Why?
