Welcome to Day 14 of the 30 Day Disney Blogging Challenge!
Today we are discussing music. I could not do a Disney Challenge without reflecting on the infamous songs that we have all been singing along to since we were children. The majority of Disney movies are musicals with many catchy numbers that ultimately make the film what it is. I could not pick between my favourite Disney Villain song and my overall favourite Disney song so I decided to split the categories between two days. As you can see by the title, today is all about villains! There are several snappy tunes sung by our antagonists but the best of the best in my eyes would have to be:
‘POOR UNFORTUNATE SOULS!’
In The Little Mermaid, Ariel seeks out Ursula the Sea-Witch after her father destroys all of her prized possessions (including a statue of Prince Eric) in her secret cavern. Ursula is a banished, wicked creature with a heart set on revenge against King Triton. Through the song Poor Unfortunate Souls, we see her propose a deal to Ariel that involves our mermaid being transformed into a human for 3 days. In that time, she has to get Prince Eric to give her the kiss of true love before the sun sets on the final day otherwise she will turn back into a mermaid forever and belong to Ursula. There is also a significant catch. Ariel must relinquish her beautiful voice to Ursula. She’s not allowed to speak or sing. Towards the end of the song, Ariel starts to sing and Ursula conjures up spirit hands to remove her voice-box and transfer it into the conch shell necklace worn by the sea-witch. Later on, Ursula transforms into the human Vanessa and uses Ariel’s voice as her own to ensnare Prince Eric’s affections.

Yet on land it’s much preferred for ladies not to say a word

Come on, they’re not all that impressed with conversation
True gentlemen avoid it when they can
But they dote and swoon and fawn
On a lady who’s withdrawn
It’s she who holds her tongue who gets a man

I’m a very busy woman and I haven’t got all day
It won’t cost much

That is a great villain song by Ursula! I’ve actually never seen her as very scary, but a villain I can sing and laugh a long with. Like Gaston from Beauty and the Beast is one of the songs that has always stuck with me. It sounds very might and although it is a self-centred song, there is so much confidence in it 🙂
