Welcome to Day 22 of the 30 Day Disney Blogging Challenge!

Today we are looking at the way Disney Villains have died and which death in particular I believe to be the most chilling. The majority of Disney films see the villains typically plunging to their deaths from high places as this is the least violent and the viewer actually never sees them hit the ground.

You will notice this happens with the Evil Queen in Snow White, Gaston from Beauty & the Beast, Clayton from Tarzan (his neck is also snapped by ropes along the way), Ratigan from The Great Mouse Detective, Judge Claude Frollo from The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Percival C. McLeach from The Rescuers Down Under, Charles F. Muntz from Up, Mother Gothel from Tangled, and to some extent Dragon Maleficent in Sleeping Beauty although she is stabbed with a sword first.

The death I have chosen is disturbing because despite not visually witnessing it happen, we get a sense of what is implied and that’s enough to send a shiver down my spine…

SCAR’S DEATH!

From the beginning of The Lion King, Scar allies himself with the hyenas to overthrow Mufasa and take his place as King of Pride Rock. He promises them in his fantastic song Be Prepared that if they stick with him, they will never go hungry again. When Simba finally returns to Pride Rock as an adult, the entire savannah is desolate and dark. There is no food or water. Scar refuses to do anything about it, slowly descending into madness. Simba orders Scar to step down as king or engage in battle for the throne. Scar blames Simba for the death of Mufasa in hopes of turning the pride against him. Simba does not argue back as he has believed his whole life that it was his fault. Before Simba is to be executed, Scar whispers in his ear that it was actually he that killed Mufasa and in a rage, Simba retaliates. He tackles his uncle and threatens to kill him unless he confesses the truth to everyone around him. He does so reluctantly which starts a war amongst the lionesses & hyenas with Timon, Pumbaa, Rafiki and Zazu assisting.

Simba corners Scar on top of Pride Rock and in one last desperate attempt at manipulation, Scar blames all of his actions on the hyenas. Unaware that Shenzi, Banzai & Ed have heard him, they growl angrily and move to alert the other hyenas of Scar’s betrayal. Scar and Simba tussle on the cliff and Scar falls off the edge but survives. As he gets to his feet, the pack of hyenas emerge starving and furious. At first, Scar is relieved to see his friends but soon it dawns on him that they overheard his lies and begins to back away. Through Scar’s shadow illuminated by the fire, you see the hyenas attack and hear his dying screams.

You can assume one of two things happen here. 1.) Scar is eaten to death by the hyenas which is most likely the case as they were ravenous beforehand. 2.) They attack and leave him to burn in the fire. Either way, it is incredibly brutal and horrible to think about. Scar certainly deserved his demise but being eaten alive is pretty terrifying.
