The Unpopular Opinions Book Tag!

Hi all!

Today I am going to be doing The Unpopular Opinions Book Tag! I sourced these questions from A Book Lover’s Playlist so click here if you wish to read her responses. Before I go any further, I just want to say that I hope this post doesn’t offend/upset anybody. Just because I may not like a certain book does not mean there is anything wrong with you liking it. We all have our own tastes and opinions. That’s what makes reading so fun and diverse. Also, the pictures in this post were taken by my husband inside the Libreria Acqua Alta in Venice that we visited in June. It was the coolest library/bookstore I have ever been in. Books everywhere! Now without further ado, let’s get into the tag!

1. Name a popular book or series you didn’t like

For this one, I’m going to say These Broken Stars by Amie Kaufman and Megan Spooner. So many people hyped up The Starbound Trilogy but unfortunately, it didn’t impress me at all. I found it to be quite slow, confusing and difficult to connect with the characters. I tried to read the sequel, This Shattered World but only got a quarter of the way through before giving up on the series altogether. To be honest, I was genuinely surprised. This is a series that everybody raves about. Not only that, Amie Kaufman produced the brilliant Illuminae and Gemina which I adored. I think personally, I’m just not a fan of survival stories. It didn’t suit my tastes but that doesn’t mean it was bad.

2. Name a popular book or series that everyone else seems to hate but you love

I don’t think this series is hated by any means but in the world of Booktube and Book Blogging, it just isn’t talked about and I cannot understand why. I am of course talking about The Demonata by Darren Shan. It may seem like a big call, but this is one of the best series I have ever read. I loved it so much that when I finished the final book, I wrote and posted a fan letter to the author. I realise the genre of horror may not be to everyone’s taste but it boggles my mind that nobody ever mentions it. This ten book journey is extremely underrated. Do yourself a favour and get into it. You won’t be sorry.

3. Name a popular fictional relationship you don’t ship

I’m sorry fans out there but I was not a big supporter of Tris and Four from The Divergent Series by Veronica Roth. They fought constantly, considered breaking up multiple times, kept secrets from one another and had serious trust issues. I thought they had a good relationship in Book #1 but it all went downhill from there and by the end, I was rooting for them to split up. I also felt that way in general about the books. I loved Divergent but Insurgent and especially Allegiant fell flat for me. Does anybody else agree?

4. Name a popular book genre you hardly reach for

I tend to stay away from the survivalist genre because it bores me. I’m also not a fan of stories set in World War 1/2 and I rarely delve into anything about religion. I believe dystopian/post-apocalyptic has been done to death however I will read it if it gets enough hype.

5. Name a popular character you do not like

I don’t hate but I’m not crazy about Clary Fray from The Mortal Instruments Series by Cassandra Clare. Despite being the protagonist and heroine of the story, Clary makes so many stupid decisions without any thought of the consequences. She’s also a tad whiny and definitely the least interesting out of the TMI cast of characters. I like her a lot more when she isn’t the lead. In The Dark Artifices Series, she comes across much more confident and bad-ass.

6. Name a popular author that you can’t seem to get into 

For this question, I’m going to say Lemony Snicket/Daniel Handler. I didn’t grow up reading A Series of Unfortunate Events and maybe that’s why I don’t love him now. Even his YA novel, Why We Broke Up didn’t wow me. I understand that so many people worship him which I can appreciate but he’s not my kind of author and I don’t think he ever will be. 

7. Name a popular book trope that you are tired of seeing

I’m a little bit over seeing ‘The Chosen One’ trope that pops up a lot in YA fiction. I always find that I end up loving all of the supporting characters over the actual protagonist hero. Having said that, a lot of my favourite books feature ‘Chosen Ones’ so I’m not entirely against it. I just feel it is being overdone a tad.

8. Name a popular book series you have no interest in reading

Do not hate me people of the internet but I probably won’t ever read the Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children Series by Ransom Riggs. I saw the film adaptation a year ago and whilst I enjoyed it, it didn’t give me any desire to start reading the books. I have no doubt it is a wonderful series but at this stage in my life, I’m not racing to pick them up. If you can convince me otherwise, feel free to try down below.

9. The saying goes “The book is always better than the movie”, but what movie or T.V. show adaptation do you prefer more than the book?

Coraline by Neil Gaiman. Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing negative about the book but the film was so beautifully put together. I loved the music and cinematography which you obviously don’t get whilst reading. I found the novel to be much scarier but the movie, whilst creepy, was really enchanting. I’ve watched it more than three times, that’s how much I love it!
