My Favourite Bookish Quotes…

Hi all!

Today I’m back with a post listing some of my absolute favourite quotes from books. I love the way I feel when I read an epic and captivating piece of text for the first time. My heart soars and my eyes fill with tears. Authors have such a gift of capturing a feeling or a thought in the most beautiful, poetic way. It was difficult to remember all of them and I know there are so many more that I missed but still, I hope you enjoy…

“I cannot live without my life! I cannot live without my soul!” –  Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte.

“Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate. Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May and summer’s lease hath all too short a date.”  – Romeo & Juliet by William Shakespeare.

“What could be better than to sit besides the fire with a book and a glowing lamp while the wind beats outside the windows?” – Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert.

“Humanity takes itself too seriously. It is the world’s original sin. If the cave-man had known how to laugh, history would have been different.” – The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde.

“In the spring of 1988, I returned to New Orleans, and as soon as I smelled the air, I knew I was home.” – Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice.

“I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what.” – To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee

“Every one suspects himself of at least one of the cardinal virtues, and this is mine: I am one of the few honest people that I have ever known.” – The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

“Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.” – Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J. K. Rowling.

“You saved my life” she tried to tell him. “Not forever, not for good. Probably just temporarily. But you saved my life, and now I’m yours. The me that’s me right now is yours. Always.” – Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell.

“Now sod off back to your own world, you motherless scum, and save your threats for those who care!” – Lord Loss by Darren Shan.

“I wish someone had just told me the truth right up front, as soon as I was old enough to understand it. I wish someone had just said: “Here’s the deal, Wade. You’re something called a ‘human being.’ That’s a really smart kind of animal. Like every other animal on this planet, we’re descended from a single-celled organism that lived millions of years ago. This happened by a process called evolution, and you’ll learn more about it But trust me, that’s really how we all got here. There’s proof of it everywhere, buried in the rocks. That story you heard? About how we were all created by a super-powerful dude named God who lives up in the sky? Total bullshit. The whole God thing is actually an ancient fairy tale that people have been telling one another for thousands of years. We made it all up. Like Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. “Oh, and by the way … there’s no Santa Claus or Easter Bunny. Also bullshit. Sorry, kid Deal with it.” – Ready Player One by Ernest Cline.

“What a treacherous thing to believe that a person is more than a person.” – Paper Towns by John Green.

“I don’t have any regrets, really, except that one. I wanted to write about you, about us, really. Do you know what I mean? I wanted to write about everything, the life we’re having and the lives we might have had. I wanted to write about all the ways we might have died.” – The Hours by Michael Cunningham.

“The books we love, they love us back. And just as we mark our places in the pages, those pages leave their marks on us. I can see it in you, sure as I see it in me. You’re a daughter of the words. A girl with a story to tell.” – Nevernight by Jay Kristoff

“Happily ever after, or even just together ever after, is not cheesy,” Wren said. “It’s the noblest, like, the most courageous thing two people can shoot for.” – Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell.

“It’s always the young ones who end it. The ones for whom mortality holds magic. As we grow older it’s eternity that is our boon.” – Blackwood Farm by Anne Rice.

This above all: to thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man.” – Hamlet by William Shakespeare.

“I wonder where you got that idea from? I mean, the idea that it’s feeble to change your mind once it’s made up. That’s a wrong idea, you know. Make up your mind about things, by all means – but if something happens to show that you are wrong, then it is feeble not to change your mind, Elizabeth. Only the strongest people have the pluck to change their minds, and say so, if they see they have been wrong in their ideas.” – The Naughtiest Girl in the School by Enid Blyton.

“I do think that families are the most beautiful things in all the world!” – Little Women by Louisa May Alcott.

“Sometimes people are beautiful. Not in looks. Not in what they say.
Just in what they are.” – I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak.

“I didn’t know someone could love me like this,” she said. “Could love me and love me and love me without…needing space.” – Attachments by Rainbow Rowell.

“Being in a relationship, that’s something you choose. Being friends, that’s just something you are. But I do pick you. We’ve been friends too long to pick, but if we could pick, I’d pick you.” – Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green.

“The consequence of this is that I’m always finding humans at their best and worst. I see their ugly and their beauty, and I wonder how the same thing can be both.” – The Book Thief by Markus Zusak.

“Maybe part of falling in love with someone else is also falling in love with yourself.” – The Sun is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon.

“You be as angry as you need to be,” she said. “Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Not your grandma, not your dad, no one. And if you need to break things, then by God, you break them good and hard.” – A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness.

“Sometimes, you do things and you do them not because you’re thinking but because you’re feeling. Because you’re feeling too much. And you can’t always control the things you do when you’re feeling too much.” – Aristotle & Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz

“We carry with us, as human beings, not just the capacity to be kind, but the very choice of kindness. – Wonder by R.J. Palacio

“There’s a word in Portuguese that my dad wrote about in one of his books: saudade.
It’s the sadness you feel for something that isn’t gone yet, but will be. The sadness of lost causes. The sadness of being alive.”
– Thanks for the Trouble by Tommy Wallach.
