My Top 5 Favourite Audio Books!

Hi all!

I recently discovered a group on Goodreads called Top 5 Wednesday that posts regular bookish topics for you to blog or make a video about. There are so many to choose from, I may make this a regular segment on my blog. Today, I am going to share with you my top 5 favourite audio books of all time…so far. I hope you enjoy!

#1 – THE ILLUMINAE FILES BY JAY KRISTOFF AND AMIE KAUFMAN

To be fair, I’ve only listened to Illuminae and Gemina on audio book as the one for Obsidio has only just been released but I know it will be phenomenal like the other two. I have mentioned this a few times on my blog but I strongly recommend listening to and reading The Illuminae Files. The audio books are narrated by a huge cast of talented individuals, bringing this epic, science fiction trilogy to life. Each track includes intergalactic sound effects, songs and music, creating an amazing atmosphere. It is a full on immersive experience that will actually make you feel as though you are in outer space!

#2 – THE LUNAR CHRONICLES BY MARISSA MEYER

I listened to the entire Lunar Chronicles on audio book, including the two novellas Fairest and Stars Above. Each one (Cinder, Scarlet, Cress & Winter) was read entirely by the quirky Rebecca Soler. She does such a great job voicing both the male and female characters of this fantastical series. If you haven’t yet read these books, or wish to re-read them, I strongly suggest trying them out on audio. They are simply magical!

#3 – ELEANOR & PARK BY RAINBOW ROWELL

Eleanor & Park is one of the most beautiful and heart-wrenching YA stories I have ever read. Listening to it on audio book enhanced all of my emotions, making me a sobbing mess by the end. If you really want to feel every inch of this beautiful tale, I recommend hearing it told out loud. A man narrates Park and a woman narrates Eleanor. I swear there was an actual chemistry between them. It felt so real to me.

#4 – I AM THE MESSENGER BY MARKUS ZUSAK

I borrowed this audio book from the library and after finishing it, I bought a copy to own. I absolutely loved listening to this story every morning on my drive to work. The narrator had such a hilarious Australian accent that made me laugh multiple times. It always brightened my mood and was such a feel-good story. Sometimes driving can be stressful, especially if you’re stuck in traffic. I would highly recommend listening to I Am The Messenger. It will make the journey so much more enjoyable.

#5 – THE ROSIE PROJECT & THE ROSIE EFFECT BY GRAEME SIMSION

I had to mention The Rosie Project because it was the first audio book I ever bought and listened to. In this story, we follow a man who has Aspergers Syndrome looking for love. The narrator does such an excellent job portraying the protagonist’s social awkwardness and monotonous voice. I understand this novel is quite controversial regarding the representation of autism but I (having known others with Aspergers) found it to be quite respectful and accurate. I believe this duology is a great place to start if you’re curious about trying an audio book. You don’t have to pay a strong amount attention like you would if you were listening to a high-fantasy story.

Thank you so much for reading! What are some of your favourite audio books? I would love new recommendations!

  1. I’ve never gotten into audio books and the only one I’ve listened to is Pirate At The Party by Lindsey Stirling. But as usual your passion for books inspires me to read more and who knows, I might do an audio book again someday. The Rosie Project sounds like a fascinating listen and deals with important topics like difference and living with certain conditions. Hope you are well my friend. Cannot wait to see you again 😊❤

    1. Audio books are so wonderful and a great way to read! I find them to be really calming. Introverts swear by audio books as they can zone out in the middle of a busy city with their headphones in and delve into a new story whilst exploring. I think you would like The Rosie Project 🙂 hopefully see you next weekend! x

  2. Thanks for sharing! I’ll check it out, I love a good audiobook.

    2. Sapiens by Yuval Hareri, sprawling history of the human race

    3. Fire and Fury by Michael Wolff, reality show drama from the unfortunate U.S. gov

    4. Yes Please by Amy Poehler, my favorite comedy memoir as read by the writer

5: Going Clear by Lawrence Wright, an epic tell-all of the Scientology cult
