My Newborn’s Book Collection!

Hi all!

Today I am going to share with you all of the books my 1 month old daughter has already accumulated (minus 2 that are currently in storage) from friends and family. A lot of these classics you may remember from your own childhood. As you know, I am a big reader and my hope is that Abigail will be too. I’m looking forward to snuggling up together one day and losing ourselves in the pages…

#1 – THE JUNGLE BOOK BY RUDYARD KIPLING

How beautiful is this edition by Penguin Classics? If you’ve seen the Disney adaptation, you’re probably already familiar with the gist of the story. This tale followers  Mowgli; a young boy adopted by a wolf pack and taught all about wild jungle life by his friends Baloo the Bear and Bhageera the Panther.

#2 – THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR BY ERIC CARLE

Does this children’s classic bring back memories? It should! I remember reading it myself as a kid. I loved all of the illustrations and the way the different foods had holes in them. This is a staple book for every childhood home.

#3 – GRUG AND HIS GARDEN BY TED PRIOR

The majority of Australian’s should remember the adorable, hairy Grug. There are so many different stories following our lovable hero and his adventures. In this book, Grug sets out on a mission to ensure all of the creatures in the garden have something to eat.

#4 – THE LORAX BY DR. SEUSS

What’s a children’s book collection without at least one story from Dr. Seuss? The Lorax is described as the original eco-warrior, hellbent on rescuing the Truffula trees from being chopped down. I love all of the illustrations, zany rhymes and positive messages that come from Dr. Seuss’s works.

#5 – GIRAFFES CAN’T DANCE BY GILES ANDREAE; ILLUSTRATED BY GUY PARKER-REES

This Number One bestseller has been delighting children for years. It follows a funny, touching story about a giraffe that wants to join the Jungle Dance with the other animals but is too scared. Sometimes all it takes is a little bit of confidence and the courage to stand out…

#6 – HAIRY MACLARY FROM DONALDSON’S DAIRY BY LYNLEY DODD

This was one of my favourite childhood classics. I was so delighted to receive a copy from my best friend to share with Abigail someday. This story follows Hairy Maclary who strolls into town one morning, followed by his adorable canine pals. The best part of this book are the quirky names of the other dogs: Bitzer Maloney, Muffin McLay, Hercules Morse, Bottomley Potts and Schnitzel von Krumm.

#7 – WE’RE GOING ON A BEAR HUNT BY MICHAEL ROSEN; ILLUSTRATED BY HELEN OXENBURY

Does anybody else remember the song? I remember singing it at school!

We’re goin’ on a bear hunt

We’re going to catch a big one,
(We’re going to catch a big one,) I’m not scared

What a beautiful day!

#8 – GOOD NIGHT STORIES FOR REBEL GIRLS BY ELENA FAVILLI AND FRANCESCA CAVALLO

And last but not least, I was given this beautiful book by another best friend. As the title states, it follows 100 tales of extraordinary women in history. The best gift we can give our children is the power and ability to believe in themselves. I want Abigail to be a proud, strong and independent woman who follows her dreams; beating her drum to her own tune. I hope these iconic women inspire her to do just that.

I hope you enjoyed this post. If you are attending a baby shower in the near future, perhaps considering gifting some classic children’s books. The ones listed above are great starting points for a developing child. Let me know if you read any of these growing up or what your favourite childhood story was. I would love to know!

Thanks for reading!

Peace & Love xoxo

  1. This looks like quite the collection of books already for Abigail! Apart from the Disney and the caterpillar books, I haven’t heard or read of the others! But they all seem to have great narratives and most importantly emphatic messages about friendship and following your dreams. Hope you are well my friend and cannot wait to see you soon xxx
