How To Make Homemade Vegan Bubble Tea!

Hi all!

Today I am going to be sharing with you not one, but two vegan bubble tea recipes that are super simple to make, caffeine free and delicious.

The bubble tea you buy in stores is not typically vegan. It’s commonly made with dairy milk and sweetened with honey. Not to mention, the tea itself is always black or green which is caffeinated. This has nothing to do with veganism but as I’m intolerant to caffeine, I cannot drink it without feeling ill. The other day I was craving it so badly, I decided to make my own; attempting a hot and cold option with different flavoured teas and plant milks. Here is how I did it:

INGREDIENTS:

2 mason jars

– 1/4 cup of tapioca pearls (per beverage)

– 2 different flavoured tea bags (any will do!)

– 2 different flavoured plant milks (any will do!)

– 1 tbs rice malt syrup (or sweetener of choice)

METHOD:

1.) For the cold option, begin by brewing one cup of your chosen tea bags and letting it steep for 10 minutes. Pour into a mug and let it chill in the refrigerator.

2.) For the hot option, you would simply brew one cup of the other tea bag and let it steep. No fridge necessary!

* I used spiced apple and chamomile tea for the cold option and a chai-type tea for the hot.

3.) In a medium sized pot, boil some water and add the tapioca pearls. After 2-3 minutes, they should rise to the surface. Cover with a lid and remove from heat for another 2-3 minutes. They should be nice and gooey now.

4.) Transfer the pearls to a small bowl of ice water and let them cool.

5.) Once cool, drain the ice water and drizzle your sweetener of choice over the pearls.

6.) Add the pearls (half and half) to the mason jars and pour the cold tea into one and the hot into the other.

7.) Fill the rest of the jars with the different plant milks. I used almond milk for the cold and soy for the hot.

*You don’t have to use milk if you don’t want. You can fill the rest with water or more tea. Play around with it!

8.) Stir and enjoy!

See the pearls at the bottom?

VERDICT:

I tasted both and in my personal opinion, I preferred the hot soy/chai option over the cold almond/apple option. I also would have used more sweetener but other than that, they were delicious! I would highly recommend you trying this recipe and experimenting with what suits your taste. It’s so versatile!

Let me know what you think! Do you like bubble tea? Have you ever tried it? Thanks for reading!

  1. What a wonderful recipe! Vegan bubble tea, and the substitutes aren’t that hard to find either, and non caffeine tea too. The soy version sounds great – would you say soy milk is thicker than almond milk? Love the mason jars too. I have one at work 😊
