Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid (Spoiler-Free) Book Review

Today I am going to be sharing with you a complete, spoiler-free book review of Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid. Before I get into it, I just want to state that The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by the same author was my favourite book of 2018, so I had pretty high hopes for this one. THE PLOT 

They were the new icons of rock and roll, fated to burn bright and not fade away.
But on 12 July 1979, it all came crashing down. There was Daisy, rock and roll force of nature, brilliant songwriter and unapologetic drug addict, the half-feral child who rose to super-stardom. There was Camila, the frontman’s wife, too strong-willed to let the band implode – and all too aware of the electric connection between her husband and Daisy.
There was Karen, ice-cool keyboardist, a ferociously independent woman in a world that wasn’t ready for her. And there were the men surrounding them: the feuding, egotistical Dunne brothers, the angry guitarist chafing on the sidelines, the drummer binge-drinking on his boat, the bassist trying to start a family amid a hedonistic world tour. They were creative minds striking sparks from each other, ready to go up in flames.

It’s never just about the music…

THE CHARACTERS 

The characters in this story are so multi-faceted and flawed that you can’t help but sympathise with their sorrows and root for their successes. Billy and Daisy, in my opinion, were the stand-outs. They both came from negligent parents; unloved, unwanted and with something to prove. Daisy especially, spends the majority of her life searching for something real and solid in a world that has continued to let her down, time and time again. Billy, despite the temptations, does his best to be an honourable man and father. Their chemistry throughout is undeniable and unrequited. I loved the presence of strong women in this book. Camila is a woman who knows what she wants and puts her family first above all else. Karen, the keyboardist, refuses to dim her shine in a male-dominant band and Daisy (despite her insecurities) fights to be seen for who she really is, never compromising her talent. Each member contributes something significant to the band, not only musically, but emotionally. This book is definitely more character-driven than plot-driven and that works for me! 

THE WRITING STYLE 

This book is written as a music-documentary so it is entirely in dialogue, spanning from the past to the present. The author remains anonymous until the end. At the back of the book, you’ll find the lyrics to every single song on the Aurora album. Please read the entire book first before looking at the lyrics. There is so much meaning to these songs and a whole emotional process behind each and every one. Once you finish the book, enjoy reading the songs and deciphering the hidden messages within. This story is currently being adapted by Reese Witherspoon who fell in love with it after it was nominated for her book club. As with her other works, Taylor writes in a way that makes you feel as though the characters are real and that this is a true-story. I actually looked up Daisy Jones & The Six because I was convinced they weren’t a work of fiction…but of course they are. I was connected and invested in this story. I really enjoyed the format. It made for a quick and easy read.  I particularly loved learning about the industry and how a successful band is born. This screams sex, drugs and rock n roll. I couldn’t recommend it enough.
