5 Horror Movies That Deeply Disturbed Me…

Hi all!

Today I am sharing with you five horror movies that deeply disturbed me. These are spooky films that got under my skin and stayed with me long after they finished playing. Just to clarify, none of the ones listed below are bad. I enjoyed most of them. Without further ado, let’s get into it! Spoilers ahead!

1.) The Exorcist

I’ve mentioned this before but I saw The Exorcist for the first time when I was 18. It traumatised me so badly, I slept in bed with my mum for longer than I care to admit. This year, I finally re-watched it, plus read the book and it certainly didn’t have the same impact it did when I was a teenager. However, I could still appreciate why it affected me and countless viewers worldwide, all those years ago. Watching a little girl undergo such a shocking transformation and mutilate herself with a crucifix is nothing to sneeze at. By the end of the movie, her face is completely unrecognisable. The actress who played Regan MacNeil (Linda Blair) needed therapy after filming wrapped up. It’s definitely a film that has stayed with viewers since its inception.

2.) Mother!

I went into Mother! knowing it was disturbing. However, it’s one thing to be told something beforehand and another thing to actually witness it. The story follows a couple (Javier Bardem and Jennifer Lawrence) who are expecting their first child. When a stranger knocks on the door one night, he becomes an unexpected guest in their home. Later, his wife and two children also arrive to make themselves welcome. Terror soon strikes when the beleaguered wife tries to figure out why her husband is so seemingly friendly and accommodating to everyone but her. It’s not long before her home is filled with hundreds of people who cannot seem to give her a straight answer. It’s a claustrophobic film that will make you want to scream. Furthermore, when she finally does give birth, the baby is passed around and eaten by the strangers. It’s completely messed up. This movie is said to contain a lot of religious symbolism, so interpret it how you will.

3.) It Follows

Ugh this film gave me the creeps. It’s such a disturbing story. After carefree teenager Jay (Maika Monroe) sleeps with her new boyfriend for the first time, she learns that she is the latest recipient of a fatal curse that is passed from victim to victim, via sexual intercourse. Death will stalk her as either a friend or stranger. Jay’s friends don’t believe her seemingly paranoid ravings, until they begin to see the phantom assassins too and band together to help her flee or defend herself. Basically, once you are cursed, a person will begin following you until they catch up and kill you. No matter how far away you go, they will eventually find you. It’s a great movie but so unsettling. The old woman in the school is an image I cannot get out of my head.

4.) Hereditary

Are you shocked to see Hereditary on this list? I bet you aren’t. If you know, you know. When the matriarch of the Graham family passes away, her daughter and grandchildren begin to unravel cryptic and increasingly terrifying secrets about their ancestry, as they try to outrun the sinister fate they have inherited. I will never look at telephone poles the same way again. Toni Collette’s acting is some of the best I’ve ever seen and by the end, she’s truly terrifying. Unfortunately, the ending of this movie was a bit of a let down. It was too bizarre for me. However, everything before it was excellent. Tongue click!

5.) Evil Dead

So when I say Evil Dead, I’m referring to the 2013 remake, because it’s the only one I’ve seen. Mia (Jane Levy) is determined to kick her drug addiction, so she asks her brother and friends to accompany her to their family’s remote forest cabin to assist with withdrawal. There, they find the mysterious Book of the Dead and read aloud from it, awakening an ancient demon. All hell breaks loose when the malevolent entity possesses Mia. This movie is gory as hell. It has the most blood I’ve ever seen and I’m a Tarantino fan. I don’t usually get queasy watching horror but this one had my stomach churning. It was so intense and too much for me. I don’t think I’ll ever revisit it.

Let me know your list. What horror movie/s deeply disturbed you? Do you agree with my choices? Thank you for reading!

Peace & Love xoxo
