Hi all!
Today I am reviewing the new-release, horror film: Barbarian. It hit cinemas in Australia last month, allowing me the pleasure of seeing it on the big screen. I’m going to make this spoiler-free, as I believe one should go into the movie blind. It’s a much better experience that way. The basic plot follows a woman that arrives at an Airbnb, only to realise somebody else is already staying there. What happens next is beyond what the imagination can conjure. A couple of influencers I am subscribed to had said it was the best horror to come out of 2022. I couldn’t wait to see if I agreed with them. Without further ado, here are my honest thoughts!
WHAT WORKED:
My favourite thing about the entire movie was the way it was filmed. It had so many unique camera angles and techniques that truly impressed me. If you can, pay attention to the various shots throughout the running time. They helped amplify the scares beautifully. As mentioned above, it’s best to know little to nothing about the plot itself. The fun of this film was trying to work out exactly what was happening. Even better was the feeling once the realisation hit. At that point, I knew I was in for a wild ride. There were some confusing time jumps but never fear, everything was explained, and it all connected. Finally, I have to mention the actors. I was so excited to see Bill Skarsgard again, as he played my beloved Pennywise in IT. He did an excellent job portraying an awkward but suspicious individual. However, Georgina Campbell and Justin Long were the main standouts. You will laugh during this movie and yes, you’re meant to. One could label it a horror comedy and they wouldn’t be wrong. There was something very satirical about the performances and the big reveal. The overall experience was a lot of fun. It kept me guessing and I was genuinely afraid in parts.
WHAT DIDN’T WORK:
My biggest issue with Barbarian was it dragged halfway through. In my opinion, there were a few scenes that could have been cut. If it had been edited with more precision, I think this would have been a perfect movie. There are some films that are lengthy but not a second feels wasted. I couldn’t say the same about this one. Other than that, it was excellent.
OVERALL STAR RATING:
I gave it 4/5 stars. It is absolutely worth seeing!
Thank you so much for reading! Let me know if you’ve watched this film. Did you like it?
Peace & Love xoxo
