Evil Dead Rise – New Release Horror Movie Review!

Hi all!

Today I am reviewing new-release, horror film: Evil Dead Rise. It hit cinemas in Australia this month, allowing me the pleasure of seeing it on the big screen. You may have heard of the Evil Dead franchise? Well, this is the latest and greatest installment to grace our theatres. The film follows a woman who finds herself in the fight for her life when an ancient book gives birth to bloodthirsty demons that run amok in a Los Angeles apartment building. I’m going to make this spoiler-free, so don’t worry about me spilling the beans. Without further ado, here are my honest thoughts!

Note: I am planning on ranking the entire Evil Dead franchise next month, so stay tuned to see where this one lands on my list!

WHAT WORKED:

Evil Dead Rise was the perfect blend of nostalgia and fresh-faced fun! It had many homages to the original films, as well as the remake. You may recognise some familiar camera angles, iconic catchphrases and of course, a certain book of the dead – the Necronomicon. If you’ve got the stomach for it, I recommend watching this movie on the big screen. The opening scene was one of my favourite parts. It really set the tone for the rest of the journey. After that, you’ve got yourself a non-stop ride of gore, scares and demonic activity from start to finish. It’s disgusting, beyond bloody (litres and litres of it) and disturbing. I truly loved it. It’s one for the horror fans and I just hope we continue to get more installments like this in the future.

WHAT DIDN’T WORK:

Whilst I enjoyed the one-location setting, it didn’t feel like the characters were living in Los Angeles. It could have been set anywhere and no one would have known the difference. You don’t see enough of the outside world to get an L.A. vibe. I would also like to mention that the storyline was quite lacking. We don’t get a whole lot of character development and plot exploration, but honestly, we didn’t need to. As you can tell, these are very minor criticisms.

OVERALL STAR RATING:

I gave it 4.5/5 stars. It’s a gory, fun ride you don’t want to miss!

Thank you so much for reading! Let me know if you’ve watched this film. Did you like it?

Peace & Love xoxo
