The Nun II – New Release Horror Movie Review!

Hi all!

Today I am reviewing new-release, horror film: The Nun II. It hit cinemas in Australia this month, allowing me the pleasure of seeing it on the big screen. In 1956 France, a priest is murdered, and it seems an evil is spreading. Sister Irene once again comes face to face with a demonic force. I’m going to make this spoiler-free, so don’t worry about me spilling the beans. However, as it’s a sequel, expect some commentary on the first movie. Without further ado, here are my honest thoughts!

WHAT WORKED:

If you read my ranking of The Conjuring franchise, you would know The Nun was my least favourite in the series. Imagine my delight when I realised the sequel corrected all of my previous issues! The Nun II provides viewers with plenty of action-packed sequences, jump-scares and most importantly, Valak. The demon pops up frequently, in fun and creative ways to get your heart racing. In fact, she almost reminded me of Pennywise – presenting a cheeky side to how she torments her victims, whilst taking the form of their deepest fears. Taissa Farmiga put on another incredible performance as Sister Irene, and it was really nice to see Storm Reid join the cast. The story mainly focuses on Maurice (A.K.A Frenchie) and the evil that spreads through the convent he is working at as a handyman. We even get an Indiana Jones style artifact hunt. Furthermore, there is a nod to the Conjuring 2 and a mid-credit scene, which hints at what’s to come.

WHAT DIDN’T WORK:

If you’re hoping for more Valak lore, you’re not going to get it. The sequel doesn’t really further the overall story, although it does bridge the gap between Sister Irene and Lorraine Warren. It simply serves to scare and remind viewers just how iconic The Nun is as a villain. Also, if you’re not a fan of jump scares, this movie may frustrate you. I like them though, so it wasn’t an issue for me.

OVERALL STAR RATING:

I gave it 4.5/5 stars. I was not expecting to enjoy it as much as I did but wow, what an improvement!

Thank you so much for reading! Let me know if you’ve watched this film. Did you like it?

Peace & Love xoxo
