Hi all!
Today I am reviewing new-release, horror film: Saw X. It hit cinemas in Australia last month, allowing me the pleasure of seeing it on the big screen. You all know by now how I feel about this franchise. It is my favourite and nothing can come close to taking its number one spot. If you want to check out my series ranking, please click here. Set after the events of the first film, John Kramer travels to Mexico for a risky and experimental medical procedure, only to discover the entire operation is a scam to defraud the most vulnerable. Armed with a newfound purpose, the infamous serial killer uses deranged and ingenious traps to turn the tables on the con artists. Without further ado, here are my honest thoughts!
WHAT WORKED:
Tobin Bell’s standout performance was the highlight of Saw X. We get the most Jigsaw screen time of any film in the franchise. That was a real treat for me. Furthermore, this instalment had a lot of heart and surprising depth. It was filled with touching moments that bathed John Kramer in a very positive light. For a violent, gory movie, it had the most humanity and vulnerability.
WHAT DIDN’T WORK:
My biggest issue lay with the pacing. It was very slow, with a steady buildup to the game, that then moved far too quickly. I personally felt the traps were rushed and a little lazy. Additionally, the Saw franchise is known for its mind-blowing twists that one typically doesn’t see coming. This particular instalment was quite predictable with very little payoff. I wanted it to have more of a connection to the events of the first and second films but aside from a mid-credit scene (stay put for that one), it did not really connect itself to either of the two. I would place it third last on my ranking of the series, just in front of Spiral and Jigsaw. Sorry!
OVERALL STAR RATING:
I gave it 4/5 stars. Unfortunately, it wasn’t my favourite horror film of the year, like I was anticipating, but I am glad it exists in the franchise.
Thank you so much for reading! Let me know if you’ve watched this film. Did you like it?
Peace & Love xoxo
