V/H/S/85 – Shudder Movie Review!

Hi all!

Today I am going to be reviewing V/H/S/85. As mentioned previously, I really want to make better use of my Shudder subscription, so I have decided to watch/review one film per month from the aforementioned spooky streaming service. In the newest installment, we follow a heart-pounding journey into the grim underbelly of the forgotten ’80s, through five tales of terror on a taped-over made-for-TV documentary. If you want to check out my ranking of the franchise, please click here. Without further ado, let’s get into my honest thoughts!

WHAT WORKED:

This instalment was probably the goriest of the entire franchise. If you’re squeamish, heed this warning. A successful V/H/S/ movie will deliver a good mix of stories that overall, are more entertaining than not. I believe 85 did exactly that. I thought the frame narrative was clever and tied in well with the rest of the tales. It kept me guessing right up until the very end. To my delight, one of the segments was directed by Scott Derrickson, who I love. You can check out my ranking of his horror works here. There were some truly original and fascinating concepts introduced, that made it an enjoyable ride.

WHAT DIDN’T WORK:

Aside from some of the outfits and hairstyles, I didn’t overly get 1985 vibes. Furthermore, I was not a huge fan of one of the stories. Despite a meta “iPhone” joke, I wasn’t sure what the point of it was.

OVERALL STAR RATING:

I gave it 4/5 stars. A really solid instalment in the franchise!

Thank you so much for reading! Have you seen V/H/S/85? What did you think of it? I’ll be back to review another Shudder feature next month!

Peace & Love xoxo
