The Ultimate Reading Challenge #15 – Read A Book By An Author With A Different Ethnicity To Yours!

Hi all!

Welcome back to The Ultimate Reading Challenge! I outlined in 2022 how the new series will work here, so check that out before progressing further. For my 15th challenge, I read The Graveyard Apartment by Mariko Koike. She is a popular detective and Japanese horror novelist. Today I am going to share my thoughts on her book, as well as my prize for completing the prompt. Without further ado, let’s get into it!

Plot: ‘The Graveyard Apartment’ by Mariko Koike:

This tale follows a young married couple – who are harbouring a dark secret – as they and their daughter move into a brand-new apartment building, built next to a graveyard. As strange and terrifying occurrences begin to pile up, people in the building begin to move out one by one, until the young family is left alone with someone… or something… lurking in the basement.

Review: ‘The Graveyard Apartment’ by Mariko Koike:

This was a beautifully written story. It was so atmospheric and dark. I loved the slow burn. The pacing was perfection. It had many unique and chilling scares. The characters were complex and full of heavy, life-changing secrets. My only issue was the ending. It felt very rushed, unfinished and unsatisfying. After taking the time to really develop and flesh out the plot, it was a shame to end it so abruptly. For that reason, I couldn’t give it a full five stars. However, I do recommend it.

Prize For Completing The Challenge:

As you can see below, my prize for completing the prompt were these different coloured lined cards that read This book belongs to: I think they are really cute and a nice idea for your book collection.

Thank you so much for reading! I will see you next month for a new bookish challenge!

Peace & Love xoxo
